Tractor-Trailer Crash Blocks Traffic at Georgia-Alabama Line

CHEROKEE COUNTY, AL. – August 30, 2018 (thesummervillenews.com) According to an online news report from thesummervillenews.com, a tractor-trailer accident on Alabama Highway 68 caused traffic to back up near the Georgia-Alabama line.*

The crash occurred on the morning of August 30 on Al. 68, which turns into Ga. 114. A tractor-trailer carrying some kind of steel reportedly crashed and flipped over on the highway, landing on its roof. It is not clear how the accident occurred or whether any other vehicles were involved. No reports about potential injuries were provided. 

The overturned tractor-trailer was blocking the entire roadway after the crash. Traffic was detoured down Holland-Chattoogaville Road until the accident was completely cleared by Cherokee County authorities. Authorities in Cherokee County, Alabama, are continuing to investigate the accident and have not released additional information to the public at this time. 

According to traffic crash data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, during the year 2016, 34,439 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

Georgia’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were near the top of the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 15.1 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.29 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled. Alabama’s rates were even higher, per the IIHS data. In Alabama, there were 21.3 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.49 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
