9-Month-Old Girl Survives North Carolina Crash After Being Ejected from Vehicle

September 04, 2018

WAYNESVILLE, NC. – August 30, 2018 (macon.com) According to an online news story on macon.com, a 9-month-old girl is miraculously barely injured after being ejected from a vehicle during a crash in North Carolina.*

On August 29, Kaytlyn Melton was driving an SUV on Interstate 40 in Waynesville, North Carolina. She hit a piece of rubber from a blown tire and lost control of her vehicle. The SUV hit a guardrail and rolled over. A 9-month-old girl was ejected from the vehicle in her child safety seat.

Neither the child nor Melton was seriously injured in the accident, which North Carolina Highway Patrol called “a Christmas miracle in August.” Both were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Troopers said the child safety seat likely is what saved the little girl’s life. No charges will be filed in connection with the accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicle crashes in the United States are the leading cause of death for children ages 2 to 14 years. As cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 663 children ages 12 and younger died in motor vehicle accidents in 2015. In 2014, more than 121,000 children 12 years or younger were injured in vehicle accidents.

In addition, a news report from NPR indicates 20 percent of U.S. children involved in serious car accidents between 2010 and 2014 were not properly restrained or were not wearing a seat belt. More than 40 percent of children who died in vehicle accidents from 2010 to 2014 were not properly restrained or were not wearing a seat belt.
