Single-Vehicle Accident Blocks Traffic in Columbia County for Five Hours

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA. – August 31, 2018 ( According to an online news article from, a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 20 blocked traffic for about five hours in Columbia County on August 30.*

The accident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. on August 30 on I-20 East near Lewiston Road and exit 191. The Georgia Department of Transportation reported that only one vehicle was involved, but all lanes on the interstate were blocked. Officials reported that no one was injured in the accident. It is not clear how the accident occurred or what caused the scene to be so large. 

By approximately 4 p.m., only the left lane of the interstate was still blocked. Shortly after 6 p.m., Georgia DOT reported that all lanes were back open. No additional information about the accident is available at this time. 

Columbia County is located on the eastern border of the state of Georgia and has an estimated population of 147,000. Interstate 20 is a major roadway running through the county, along with U.S. Route 78, U.S. Route 221, and U.S. Route 278. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Columbia County has seen a large jump in vehicle accidents during the last several years. In 2012, 373 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 63 injuries and eight fatalities. These numbers remained relatively steady during the next three years: 336 accidents in 2013 with 47 injuries and 10 fatalities; 379 accidents in 2014 with 50 injuries and seven fatalities; and 353 accidents in 2015 with 49 injuries and 15 fatalities. 

However, in 2016, the number of vehicle accidents in Columbia County skyrocketed to 4,051. From these accidents, 972 people were injured, and 17 people died. More than half of the fatal accidents that year were related to alcohol or speeding.
