Georgia University Student Killed in Michigan Car Crash

September 05, 2018

OMER, MI. – September 1, 2018 (ajc.com) As reported by ajc.com, a 21-year-old University of Georgia student was killed in a head-on vehicle collision August 19 in Omer, Michigan.*

At approximately 10:45 a.m. on August 19, 52-year-old Karen Lee, of Dacula, Georgia, was driving on U.S. 23 in Omer, Michigan. Her children, 21-year-old Amy Lee and 24-year-old Timothy Lee, were in the vehicle with her at the time. Near Washington Road, a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction crossed the centerline of the highway and crashed into the Lees’ vehicle head-on.

Karen, Amy, and Timothy Lee were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center with unknown injuries. Amy reportedly died of her injuries. Karen’s and Timothy’s medical conditions are not known, but a student newspaper for the University of Georgia reported that Amy was survived by her mother and brother.

It is not clear what caused the driver of the second vehicle, 35-year-old Bryan Bell, of Saginaw, Michigan, to cross the centerline or whether he was injured in the collision. Officials reported he would not be charged in connection with the accident. Officials also said they did not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Amy Lee was beginning her senior year at the University of Georgia, where she was majoring in special education and was a student ambassador for the College of Education. She was involved in several campus organizations, including Extra Special People, serving as a buddy and mentor for special needs children in an after-school program. An article in the student newspaper highlights how she will be remembered for her warm smile and caring spirit.
