Longtime Drummer for George Strait Dies in Car Accident

September 08, 2018

NASHVILLE, TN. – September 1, 2018 (theboot.com) A longtime drummer for country music artist George Strait died in a car accident August 31, according to an online story on theboot.com.*

At approximately 4 p.m. on August 31, Mike Kennedy, 59, of Baxter, Tennessee, was reportedly driving a 1999 GMC Sierra westbound on Interstate 40 in Lebanon, Tennessee. Near mile marker 238, he collided a tractor-trailer that was merging into another lane. The impact sent the tractor-trailer into a Chevrolet Silverado.

According to a report by Tennessee Highway Patrol, Kennedy was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. However, investigators noted that a seat belt would likely not have made a difference. No one else was injured in the accident, and no other parties involved have been identified.

It is not clear what caused the crash. The accident reportedly blocked lanes of traffic on I-40 for several hours. Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the incident and has not yet released additional information to the public.

Kennedy had been a drummer since he was a young boy. He played with Barbara Fairchild and Ricky Staggs before becoming a member of George Strait’s band, Ace in the Hole, in the early 1980s. He was a left-handed drummer and also played with Jamey Johnson and Bill Anderson.

Paul Rogers, production manager for George Strait Productions, posted on social media: “The heartbeat of our band is gone. Not sure how we will get back on stage without him. But we must. Much love and respect, my dear friend Mike Kennedy.”
