Dade County Motorcycle Crash Leaves Two Seriously Injured

September 06, 2018

DADE COUNTY, GA. – September 3, 2018 (newschannel9.com) According to an online news report from newschannel9.com, two people were seriously injured in a motorcycle accident September 3 in Dade County, Georgia.*

The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. September 3 on Interstate 59 North. Near Exit 4, a motorcycle left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area. No other vehicles were involved. A man was flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital, and a woman was transported to a hospital via ambulance, according to authorities. It is not clear how the accident occurred, and the victims have not been identified.

The Dade County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. The accident caused all of I-59 northbound to shut down for about an hour.

More than 10 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state of Georgia involve motorcyclists, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. This statistic has held true for a decade. In 2016, approximately 173 motorcyclists died in motor vehicle accidents, which represented a 26 percent increase in motorcyclist fatalities since 2014.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety says riders who do not wear helmets continue to be most affected, with incidents involving motorcyclists without helmets on the rise since 2013. In 2016, an estimated 10 motorcyclist fatalities involved un-helmeted riders. However, the number of un-helmeted riders seemed to decline after 2016.

In 2017, 209 motorcyclists were killed in vehicle crashes, and data indicate 3 percent of those people were not wearing helmets. So far in 2018, the Office reports 264 people have died in motorcycle accidents in Georgia, three of whom were not wearing helmets.
