Driver Flees Scene of Fatal Three-Vehicle Accident in Americus, GA

AMERICUS, GA. – August 31, 2018 ( After causing a deadly hit-and-run crash in Americus, Georgia, the driver of a van fled the scene, according to an online news report from*

The crash occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on August 27 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 280 and Felder Street in Americus. Georgia State Patrol says three cars were involved, including a Honda CR-V, an Oldsmobile Intrigue, and a van. It is not clear how the accident occurred. The driver of the van reportedly caused the wreck and fled the scene before authorities arrived. Anthony Lowe, 59, of Americus, tragically perished as a result of the crash. 

The search for the missing driver is ongoing, according to Georgia State Patrol. No description of the vehicle has been provided, but authorities say the driver was borrowing the van and abandoned the vehicle then fled on foot. Anyone with potential information about the driver and his or her whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Americus division of the Georgia State Patrol by calling (229) 931-2397. 

Americus is the county seat of Sumter County, Georgia, which is located in the southwestern part of the state. The county population is estimated to be approximately 30,000, and its major roadways include U.S. Route 19 and U.S. Route 280. 

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety recently compiled vehicle crash data for Sumter County, showing that traffic accidents have been rising during the last several years. In 2012, a total of 501 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 175 injuries and five fatalities. The total number of accidents was highest during 2015, when 810 accidents occurred. In 2016, accidents in Sumter County dropped slightly to 761, which resulted in 218 injuries and seven fatalities.
