Man Killed in Augusta Rear-End Collision; Police Say Alcohol Involved

September 08, 2018

AUGUSTA, GA. – September 1, 2018 (wrdw.com) A rear-end collision on Interstate 20 in Augusta September 1 left a man dead, according to an online news report from wrdw.com. Authorities say the driver responsible was under the influence of alcohol.*

Just before 3 a.m. on September 1, 61-year-old Vernon Eugene Faglier, of Thomson, Georgia, was driving a 2008 Nissan westbound on I-20 in Augusta. Near mile marker 198, a 2009 BMW traveling at a high rate of speed rear-ended Faglier’s Nissan. The collision sent both vehicles off the road and into a wooded area.

Faglier was ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene, according to investigators. The driver of the BMW, 27-year-old Jonathan Ewing Butler, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Augusta University Medical Center. Upon discharge, he was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide in the first degree, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving too fast for conditions, and following too closely.

Faglier’s daughter, Crystal Hallford, told reporters that prior to the crash, her father was on his way to McDonalds because he wanted a hamburger. Hallford received a frantic call from her mother when Faglier didn’t return home.

“Why? Why did he do that to my dad,” Hallford asked of Butler’s actions. “I mean, why couldn’t you just take an Uber? My dad was my best friend. So I feel like I just lost my best friend.”

Faglier was a chemical engineer and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force with 20 years of service. Authorities are continuing to investigate the collision and have not yet released additional information.
