UPDATE: New Information Released in Columbus, GA, Single-Vehicle Accident

COLUMBUS, GA. – August 28, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, more information is now available about a single-vehicle accident August 27 that killed a 26-year-old man in Columbus, Georgia.*

The accident occurred on the morning of August 27. Travis McCorkle, 26 (city not reported), was driving on Woodruff Farm Road and crashed his vehicle. The nature and cause of the accident were not originally reported. 

However, it is now reported that the accident occurred at 2:42 a.m., and McCorkle was driving a 2001 Acura Integra. Just north of Macon Road, he failed to maintain his lane, lost control of the vehicle, and drove off the side of the road. He then spun clockwise, crossing both the south- and north-bound lanes of the roadway. The vehicle traveled off the road again and struck a tree in a wooded area near the road. The vehicle was then disabled.  

McCorkle’s was the only vehicle involved, and it appears McCorkle was alone in the vehicle. He was transported to Piedmont Columbus Regional, where he died of his injuries, according to Deputy Coroner Charles Newton. An autopsy will not be performed. 

It is still not clear what initially caused McCorkle to lose control of his vehicle. Muscogee County authorities are investigating the incident and have not yet released additional information. 

In 2016, 8,299 vehicle accidents occurred in Muscogee County (where Columbus is located), based on data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Those accidents resulted in injuries to 1,659 people and in the deaths of 27 people. Almost one-third of the fatal accidents in Muscogee County in 2016 were related to alcohol or speeding.
