Traffic Lights in Valdosta, GA, to Receive Upgraded Software

September 03, 2018

VALDOSTA, GA. – August 28, 2018 ( The traffic lights in the City of Valdosta, Georgia, will soon receive upgraded software designed to handle power outages and accidents, according to an online news report from*

All 128 of the stop lights in Valdosta will undergo software changes that will help the city better control malfunctions that occur during outages and traffic crashes. Currently, if a malfunction occurs, the side streets will begin flashing red, and the main streets will begin flashing yellow. With the software upgrade, all lights will flash red. No streets will flash yellow.

“That will increase the safety here in the city because the last thing we want is for a citizen to go through an intersection and have an accident,” said traffic manager Larry Ogden.

The city expects the upgrades to take about six weeks to install. When the lights have been changed, the city’s intersections will operate as a four-way stop during a malfunction.

Valdosta is located in Lowndes County, Georgia. Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety show vehicle accidents in Lowndes County have increased during the last several years. In 2013, 1,384 vehicle accidents occurred in the county. That number almost doubled the following year, jumping to 2,620.

In 2015, the number of accidents increased to 3,698 and moved up to more than 4,000 in 2016. Vehicle accidents in Lowndes County in 2016 led to 1,318 injuries and 17 fatalities. Four of the fatal accidents that year involved alcohol consumption by one of the drivers, and one fatal accident occurred because of excessive speeding.
