Driver Charged in Crash that Killed Woodstock Motorcyclist

WOODSTOCK, GA. – August 29, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, the driver of an SUV has been charged for hitting a motorcyclist August 15 in Woodstock, Georgia. The motorcyclist died of his injuries almost two weeks later.*

The crash occurred at approximately 6 a.m. on August 15 on East Cherokee Drive, near Woodstock. William Lunsford, 48, of Woodstock, was riding his motorcycle eastbound on East Cherokee Drive. At the area of Tomahawk Trail, a westbound SUV attempted to turn into a convenience store and struck Lunsford’s motorcycle. 

Lunsford was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia, with serious injuries. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jay Baker told reporters that Lunsford died of his injuries August 28. 

The driver of the SUV, 66-year-old William Bartula, of Woodstock, was not injured. He has now been charged with vehicular homicide in the second degree and failure to yield left turn. Upon announcement of the death of Lunsford and the criminal charges against him, Bartula turned himself in to authorities. He was booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center and later released on a $2,211 bond. 

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Cherokee County prosecutors are still investigating the accident and has not yet released additional information. 

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, traffic accidents in Cherokee County are on the rise. In 2012, 3,067 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 785 injuries and 18 deaths. Two of these fatal accidents involved motorcyclists. By 2016, the total number of accidents more than doubled, growing to 6,646. These accidents led to 1,427 injuries and seven deaths. None of the fatal accidents in 2016 involved motorcyclists. However, in the year prior (2015), almost half of the fatal traffic accidents in Cherokee County involved motorcyclists.
