September 03, 2018

DECATUR, GA. – August 30, 2018 (ajc.com) According to an online news report from ajc.com, authorities have now identified the man tragically killed August 29 in a head-on vehicle collision in Decatur, Georgia.*

The crash occurred in the early morning hours of August 29, around 1:30 a.m., on Panthersville Road and Oakvale Drive, near Georgia State University Perimeter College in Decatur. Police say 24-year-old Pierce Thompson was traveling southbound on Panthersville Road and suddenly veered into the northbound lane of the road. Thompson’s Dodge Challenger then crashed head-on into a northbound Honda Accord.

After impact, a fire ignited. Thompson was trapped in his vehicle, and a Lyft driver who was passing by and witnessed the accident stopped to try to pull Thompson from the flames. Thompson, however, died in the crash. Social media information indicates he was a recent graduate of West Georgia and had a young son.

The driver of the Honda, a woman who has not been identified, sustained only minor injuries in the crash, according to police. It is not yet clear what caused Thompson to drive into oncoming traffic. Decatur authorities are investigating the collision and have not yet released additional information to the public.

Decatur is located in — and is the county seat of — DeKalb County, in the north-central part of the state of Georgia. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents in DeKalb County have more than doubled in the last several years. In 2012, a total of 15,743 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 3,775 injuries and 76 deaths. By 2016, those numbers jumped significantly, rising to 39,383 total accidents, 10,158 injuries, and 80 deaths.
