Traffic Accident on Philema Road in Lee County, Georgia

LEE COUNTY, GA. – August 30, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a wreck on August 30 slowed traffic through part of Lee County, Georgia.*

The accident occurred in the morning hours of August 30 on Philema Road in Lee County. Lee County law enforcement officers were on-scene after the wreck, guiding traffic north and south on Philema, near the intersection with Sportsman’s Club Road. The center lane of the roadway was blocked, but the four lanes of travel remained open. 

The cause and nature of the accident were not reported. It is not clear how many vehicles or people were involved or whether anyone was injured.  

Lee County is located in the south-western part of the state of Georgia. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the county had a population of approximately 28,300. Its county seat is Leesburg, and its major roadways include U.S. Route 19 and U.S. Route 82. 

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety compiled data on vehicle accidents in Lee County during the years 2012 to 2016, showing that accidents have increased unsteadily during the last several years. In 2012, 667 vehicle crashes occurred in the county, leading to 136 injuries and two deaths. Those numbers increased in 2013 — 726 total accidents, 126 injuries, and four deaths — but then decreased in 2014 — 687 total accidents, 133 injuries, and three deaths.

After 2014, vehicle accidents in Lee County rose to 702 total, resulting in 170 injuries and three deaths. By 2016, the total number of accidents had risen to almost 800, causing nearly 180 injuries and three deaths. New data for 2017 and 2018 is not yet available.
