Plane Crash in Emanuel County Leaves Four Dead, One Seriously Injured

EMANUEL COUNTY, GA. – August 27, 2018 ( A plane crash August 25 in Emanuel County, Georgia, left four people dead and one seriously injured, according to an online news report from*

The crash occurred in the afternoon of August 25. Five people were on board the Cessna 182A that had just taken off for a skydiving lesson. The plane, owned by Statesboro, Georgia, skydiving company Jump Place, crashed at the East Georgia Regional Airport and burst into flames. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but they were only able to pull two people from the wreckage, one of whom died at the scene.

The lone survivor, William Brooks (age and city not reported), sustained critical injuries and was transported to Augusta University Medical Center, where is he still in serious condition. The Emanuel County Coroner identified the four victims as 23-year-old Andrew Swenson, of South Daytona Beach, Florida; 31-year-old Aliaksandr Bahrytsevich, of Raeford, North Carolina; 42-year-old Justin Duff, of Statesboro; and 42-year-old Chris Eldridge, of Rincon, Georgia. 

In a Facebook post, the United States Army Golden Knights confirmed Bahrytsevich, a native of Belarus, was a member of the U.S. Army Parachute team. The post said he was passionate about skydiving and was a mentor to other members of the parachute team. 

Emanuel County Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens said of the accident, “This is the worst crash, as far as fatalities, that I’ve seen as Sheriff for 34 years in Emanuel County. It affects so many people. So many children, so many mothers, so many fathers, sons, brothers, sisters … Sad day. Sad day.”

The National Transportation Safety Board in investigating the crash, the cause of which is not yet known.
