Bystanders Pull Man From Burning Car in Liberty County, Georgia

August 29, 2018

LIBERTY COUNTY, GA. – August 24, 2018 ( As reported online by, three bystanders saved a driver from a burning car after he had crashed into a tree in Liberty County, Georgia.*

The accident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on August 24 on Ga. 196 in Liberty County. Georgia State Patrol said 26-year-old Deondre Shuman, of Hinesville, Georgia, was driving westbound on Ga. 196 and lost control of his vehicle. He traveled into the eastbound lane and struck a tree head-on. After the impact, Shuman’s vehicle caught on fire.

That’s when three good Samaritans rushed to the scene to save Shuman. Brandon Long, Ron Sluder, and a third man, who wanted to remain anonymous, opened Shuman’s doors and tried to pull him out. The flames were growing, and smoke was spilling from the car, as the men struggled to free Shuman. Finally, they were able to pull him to safety by his legs.

Emergency responders then arrived at the scene, and Shuman was airlifted to Memorial Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. His current medical condition is not reported.

Liberty County Fire Chief Brian Darby said the three men who helped Shuman made the difference. “If it had not been for these three bystanders, he probably wouldn’t have lived or had a fighting chance,” Darby said. “Seconds matter. Minutes matter.”

Darby was amazed by their heroism and their humility after the incident. “Not a single one of them came up to me and said, ‘Oh, I was the one that pulled [him] out of the vehicle,’” Darby said. “Actually, it took some digging into [it] to find out who did make the patient contact, who did pull [him] out of the vehicle. Nobody wanted an ‘atta girl’ or ‘atta boy’ or pat on the shoulder. Nobody.”
