UPDATE: Authorities Identify Motorcyclist Killed After Hitting Stalled Car on I-285

August 29, 2018

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – August 24, 2018 ( Authorities have identified the motorcyclist who died August 24 in DeKalb County, Georgia, after crashing into a stalled car on Interstate 285, according to an online article from*

DeKalb County authorities say the crash occurred in the afternoon on August 24. A woman, who has not been identified, was involved in a minor accident with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 285 near Moreland Avenue. The woman stopped her Honda on the interstate, but the tractor-trailer did not stop. Authorities said the tractor-trailer driver might not have realized he or she hit a car.

A motorcyclist traveling at a high rate of speed came upon the stopped Honda and tried to avoid it. Atlanta police say the motorcyclist swerved into the left emergency lane but still crashed into the Honda. Authorities identified the motorcyclist as 29-year-old Irvin Smith, of Covington, Georgia. Smith died on the scene. Police said he was speeding before the accident occurred.

The driver of the Honda sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Atlanta Police did not believe her injuries were life-threatening.

The crash caused all lanes of I-285 East to be shut down for several hours, as crews investigated and cleared the scene. The roadway was reopened before the start of the Monday morning rush hour. Authorities are continuing to investigate the collision and have not released additional information at this time. It is not clear whether the Honda driver bears any fault in the collision or whether she will be cited.
