Monday Morning Accidents Disrupt Traffic for Atlanta Commuters

August 30, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – August 27, 2018 (11alive.com) The work week was off to a slow start for many people traveling in and around Atlanta August 27, as two large accidents on a major interstate left traffic at a standstill. An article on 11alive.com details the traffic delays.*

One wreck in the area occurred at Interstate 20 East and Fulton Industrial Boulevard. All lanes of eastbound travel were blocked at one time, as crews responded to the three-car collision. For people traveling to Interstate 285, delays began at Highway 92 in Douglas County. The accident was eventually cleared off to the side. Drivers were encouraged to use the alternate routes of Veterans Memorial Highway and Mableton Parkway.

Another accident occurred on I-20 that morning, as well, this one affecting westbound traffic. The crash occurred near Conyers and involved four vehicles. Delays for drivers started at Highway 138, and drivers were encouraged to use the alternate routes of Flat Shoals Road and Covington Highway.

Atlanta is located in Fulton County and extends partially into DeKalb County, Georgia. Fulton County has a large population — estimated at more than 1 million — and has vehicle accident numbers to match. In 2016, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, nearly 61,000 vehicle accidents occurred in Fulton County. These vehicle accidents led to 12,875 injuries and 129 deaths.

During the five-year period between 2012 and 2016, Fulton County had a major jump in vehicle collisions. In 2012, a total of 22,275 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 4,498 injuries and 77 deaths. By 2015, the number of accidents had grown well above 50,000, with fatality accidents reaching above 100.
