Fatal ATV Accident Kills Two in Emanuel County, Georgia

August 30, 2018

EMANUEL COUNTY, GA- reports that two people died in an ATV accident on Sunday. August 26, 2018. The crash happened at about 5:15 p.m. when the ATV that the victims were traveling on collided with a passenger vehicle on Old Wadley Road.*

The victims were identified as 52-year-old Tony Wayne Purvis and 24-year-old Anttaney Clifton. Both victims are from Swainsboro.

About 300 to 400 people are killed in ATV accidents every year in the United States. While ATVs are not designed to be used on public roads, but some places have been changing their laws to allow these vehicles to use roads. Safety groups and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission hold the position that ATVs should not be used on roadways, and manufacturers sell these vehicles with warnings stating that people riding on these vehicles should not enter the road. Currently, even though ATVs are not allowed on the road in many places, about 60 percent of fatal ATV crashes involve collisions with that occurred on public roadways.

Part of the risk of ATVs on roads is visibility. Drivers might not see ATVs because they are smaller than other vehicles on the road. However, even if this issue is addressed, the design of ATVs is another problem entirely. ATVs are built rocky terrain and dirt roads in mind. They have features that are suited for off-road driving that doesnot work well on pavement. On pavement, ATVs present a high risk of flipping over. In about one-thirdof fatal crashes, ATVs were involved in collisions with other vehicles. Many of the victims in these crashes were not using helmets.
