2-Year-Old Girl Killed by Car in Driveway in Canton, Georgia

August 30, 2018

CANTON, GA- Patch.com reports that a two-year-old child was killed by a vehicle over the weekend. The victim, Lilly, died on Sunday, August 26, 2018.*

According to Patch, Lilly was at her home and outside with another child. They were being watched by their uncle, who reportedly resides with the family. The uncle’s employer stopped at the house to drop off the uncle’s paycheck. The uncle spoke with his employer, the employer apparently never exited his vehicle. At some point, Lilly had crawled under the vehicle and was then hit by the vehicle. The parents were not at the house when the accident occurred.

Lilly was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital and then airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She tragically died at the hospital. The accident is under investigation. But there are no reports of any impairment, and no charges are anticipated.

Children are backed over in driveways about 50 times a week, with an average of two fatalities each week. The victims are typicallytoddlers. It is possible for 6o children to fit in the blind zone of an SUV. The blind zone for SUVs is about 39 feet, trucks can have up to 50-foot blind zones, and the average blind zone of a motor vehicle is about 28 feet. It is shockingly easy for a small child to be overlooked by a person backing out of a parking spot of a driveway.

Backup cameras can help reduce the likelihood ofthese tragic accidents. These cameras cut down a vehicle’s blind zone by about 90 percent. Backup cameras are now required in every new car in the United States.
