Elderly Pedestrian Killed When Struck By a Van in Tbilisi, Georgia

August 30, 2018

TBILISI, GA- Georgiatoday.ge reports that a 66-year-old woman was killed by a vehicle while she was walking home on Monday, August 27, 2018. The crash took place on Beliashvili Street. The woman was reportedly killed instantly when she was struck by a van.*

Eyewitnesses to the accident said that the van did not appear to be violating any traffic laws or traveling at an excessive speed when the woman was struck. The name of the driver has not been released. The investigation is ongoing.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 5,376 pedestrians killed by cars in the United States in 2015. This means that about one pedestrian in the United States dies because of being struck by a vehicle every 1.6 hours. Of course, there are many more people who are severely injured in pedestrian accidents. In 2015, nearly 129,000 pedestrians were taken to emergency rooms for treatment of injuries that hey sustained because of being struck by a vehicle.

The populations most at risk ofpedestrian accidents are older adults and children. The CDC reports that 19 percent of pedestrian deaths in 2015 involved victims who were 65 or older. About 20 percent of victims were 15 or younger.

Vehicle speed is a major risk factor. Cars and other vehicles that are traveling faster are more likely to be involved in an accident, and if they are involved in a pedestrian accident, the likelihood of the victim surviving decreases when the speed of the vehicle is greater. Another factor is alcohol. Nearly half of all pedestrian accidents involve either a victim or a driver who was under the influence of alcohol.
