Semi-Truck Overturns in Conyers, GA, Spills 18 Tons of Gravel Onto Road

August 28, 2018

CONYERS, GA. – August 23, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a dump truck overturned August 23 in Conyers, Georgia, spilling 18 tons of gravel onto an Interstate 20 overpass.*

The accident occurred at approximately 11:20 a.m. on August 23 on the West Avenue bridge over Interstate 20 in Conyers. It is not clear how the accident occurred, but it involved the dump truck and two passenger cars. The Conyers Police Department says one person in a passenger car was airlifted to a local hospital after the crash. Two other people reportedly sustained minor injuries but declined treatment.

The northbound lanes of West Avenue were closed while crews turned the dump truck upright and cleared away the 18 tons of gravel that had spilled into the roadway. Conyers Police is continuing to investigate.

The dump truck collision occurred at the exact spot where a mattress fire halted traffic the day prior. At approximately noon on August 22, a mattress became lodged underneath a tractor-trailer on the West Avenue bridge in Conyers. The mattress then caught on fire, causing the I-20 overpass to shut down. A spokesperson for the Conyers Police Department said the fire was quickly extinguished, but it punctured an air line on the tractor-trailer.

The incident blocked traffic for about two hours in the area. No injuries were reported. It is not clear why the mattress was on the roadway or how it became lodged under the truck.
