Mattress Catches on Fire on I-20 Overpass in Conyers, Georgia

CONYERS, GA. – August 22, 2018 ( A news report from details a bizarre accident on Interstate 20 in Conyers, Georgia, in which a mattress caught on fire.*

At approximately noon on August 22, a mattress became lodged underneath a tractor-trailer on the West Avenue bridge over Interstate 20 in Conyers. The mattress then caught on fire, causing the I-20 overpass to shut down. A spokesperson for the Conyers Police Department said the fire was quickly extinguished, but it punctured an air line on the tractor-trailer. 

The incident blocked traffic for about two hours in the area. No injuries were reported. It is not clear why the mattress was on the roadway or how it became lodged under the truck. 

Conyers is located in Rockdale County, Georgia. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Rockdale County has seen a rise in the number of vehicle accidents that occur inside its boundaries. In 2012, a total of 2,001 vehicle accidents occurred in Rockdale County, which resulted in injuries to 486 people and in the deaths of eight people. The total number of accidents and injuries actually dropped the following year, while the fatality rate remained the same — 1,966 total accidents, 456 injuries, eight deaths. 

After 2013, the number of accidents and injuries in the county increased significantly. Close to 3,000 accidents occurred in Rockdale County in 2014, causing 600 injuries and nine deaths. By 2015, 3,502 accidents took place in the county, with more than 823 injuries reported. The numbers increased again in 2016, with 3,752 total accidents, 888 injuries, and 13 deaths.
