Child Ejected from Vehicle in Crash Outside Gwinnett County School

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA. – August 23, 2018 (ajc.com) According to an online news report from ajc.com, a child was ejected from a vehicle during a wreck August 23 outside of a Gwinnett County elementary school.*

The crash occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. at the intersection of Ridge Road and South Puckett Road in Buford, Georgia. This intersection is outside of Ivey Creek Elementary School. Police say the driver of the vehicle, a 78-year-old man, attempted to make a U-turn at the intersection and was struck by an oncoming car. A child in the vehicle was ejected and suffered serious injuries.

Police did not provide identifying information about the child, aside from saying he is a boy under the age of 10 and is a student at Ivey Creek. He is reportedly in critical condition but is expected to survive. It is not clear whether he was in a child seat or wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the car carrying the boy was arrested, and charges are pending. 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicle crashes in the United States are the leading cause of death for children ages 2 to 14 years. As cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 663 children ages 12 and younger died in motor vehicle accidents in 2015. In 2014, more than 121,000 children 12 years or younger were injured in vehicle accidents. 

In addition, a news report from NPR indicates 20 percent of children involved in serious car accidents between 2010 and 2014 were not properly restrained or were not wearing a seat belt. More than 40 percent of children who died in vehicle accidents from 2010 to 2014 were not properly restrained or were not wearing a seat belt.
