Dublin Police Chief Tim Chatman said the department received a call about a “very bad” accident around 9:45 a.m. on August 23. The wreck involved only one vehicle and occurred near Brookhaven Drive and Cedar Creek Drive, right by the Kroger grocery store in Dublin. Police say the woman driving the car, 18-year-old Kirsten O’Quinn, left the roadway and hit a tree.

Dublin, Georgia, is located in Laurens County and named after Dublin, Ireland. The city is a midpoint between Savannah and Atlanta and therefore has become home to several industrial distribution centers. Laurens County is geographically one of the larger counties in the state of Georgia but does not have an enormous population. Its estimated population is around 48,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 16, U.S. Route 80, U.S. Route 319, and U.S. Route 441.

Laurens County sees a sizeable number of vehicle accidents each year, according to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, many of which result in fatalities. In the five-year period from 2012 to 2016, more than 7,122 accidents occurred in the county. Of those, almost 2,000 resulted in some form of injuries to the people involved, and nearly 60 resulted in deaths. Many fatality accidents in Laurens County involve excessive speeding or consumption of alcohol.
