2-Year-Old Injured in Rollover Accident in Rome, Georgia

ROME, GA. – August 23, 2018 (northwestgeorgianews.com) According to an online report from northwestgeorgianews.com, a rollover accident August 23 in Rome, Georgia, resulted in injuries to a 2-year-old child.*

The accident occurred in the afternoon on August 23 at the intersection of U.S. 27 South and Walker Mountain Road. The Rome Police Department indicates a van turned out in front of a Mercedes SUV, after which the Mercedes struck the van on the passenger’s side. The van turned over, and its two occupants, including a 2-year-old child, had to be extricated from the vehicle by Rome-Floyd County firefighters. 

The driver of the van, the 2-year-old child, and the driver of the Mercedes were all transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries. Their current medical conditions are not known. The driver of the van was reportedly cited for failure to yield. 

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

On a state level, the fatality rates ranged from 4.0 per every 100,000 people in the District of Columbia to 23.1 per every 100,000 people in Mississippi. The rates also ranged from 0.66 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Rhode Island, to 1.88 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in South Carolina. 

Georgia’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were closer to the top of the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 15.1 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.29 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
