Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro, GA, Becomes Site of Another Pedestrian Fatality

JONESBORO, GA. – August 22, 2018 (news-daily.com) A man was struck and killed by a vehicle August 22 on Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro, Georgia, according to news-daily.com. The accident serves as a reminder of the numerous pedestrian fatalities that have taken place on this particular roadway.*

On August 22, at approximately 5:15 a.m., 35-year-old Cleveland J. Brown, of Carrollton, Georgia, was walking across the southbound lanes of Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro. A gray Pontiac minivan struck Brown, after which at least two additional vehicles hit him. Brown sadly died of his injuries at the scene. 

Georgia State Patrol reported there were no street lights in the area of the road where Brown was crossing (the accident occurred before sunrise), and Brown was wearing dark-colored clothing at the time. All of the drivers remained at the scene, and all southbound lanes of Tara Boulevard were blocked for part of the morning while officers cleared the scene. No one has been charged at this time, and Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident. 

The accident that killed Brown is one of many to occur on this roadway. According to the above-linked article, a 2018-2022 Pedestrian Safety Action Plan conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation indicates 17 serious pedestrian injuries and eight pedestrian fatalities occurred on Tara Boulevard between 2011 and 2015. All of these accidents occurred between Flint River Road and Interstate 75. Several pedestrians have died on or near Tara Boulevard recently, including one accident in August 2017, one in October 2017, and one in May 2018. 

In Clayton County as a whole (where Jonesboro is located), 706 pedestrian crashes occurred during the period between 2011 and 2015. Nearly 600 of those crashes involved injuries, and 37 resulted in the deaths of the pedestrians.
