Fatal Dodge County Accident Preceded by High-Speed Chase

August 27, 2018

DODGE COUNTY, GA. – August 22, 2018 (13wmaz.com) A vehicle wreck August 22 that killed three people in Dodge County, Georgia, was preceded by a high-speed chase with law enforcement, according to an online story from 13wmaz.com.*

The accident occurred August 22 at Highway 46 and Lester Saunders Road in Dodge County. Georgia State Patrol says 29-year-old Charles Howell was driving a 2008 Honda Civic eastbound and traveled into the westbound lane on the path of a Dodge County Sheriff’s deputy. The deputy had to swerve into the shoulder to avoid a collision with Howell’s vehicle, after which the deputy made a U-turn to try to pull Howell over. However, Howell refused to stop and sped away from the deputy at about 110 mph.

After a three- or four-mile pursuit, Howell’s vehicle swerved off the right side of the roadway, flipped, and crashed into an oak tree. Howell was airlifted to Navicent Medical Center in Macon, Georgia, with serious injuries, according to the Dodge County Coroner.

Three passengers were in the Honda with Howell at the time, and all three died in the crash. The coroner identified the three deceased victims as 37-year-old Jonathan Long, of Jeffersonville, Georgia, 35-year-old Alicia Cherry, of Helena, Georgia, and 30-year-old Casey Kroesser, of Eastman, Georgia. The coroner said Kroesser was pregnant at the time, but he could not confirm how many months she was into her pregnancy.

It is not clear why Howell was driving on the wrong side of the roadway or why he fled from the deputy. Dodge County authorities and Georgia State Patrol are investigating the circumstances of the crash and have not released additional information. It is not clear how the crash occurred.
