Major Thoroughfare Shut Down for Four Hours after Fatal Pedestrian Accident

September 01, 2018

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA — At least three motorists struck a pedestrian in Clayton County on Wednesday, August 22, 2018. According to, the events leading up to the fatal accident transpired about 5:15 a.m. at Tara Boulevard and Ga. 138 in Jonesboro. The accident delayed traffic for over four hours as local police tried to sort out the situation as they sought to determine why the pedestrian was run over.*

The accident took place in the southbound lanes of Tara Boulevard. The Georgia State Patrol troopers investigating the accident closed all of the lanes traveling in a southerly direction. Consequently, traffic heading north on Tara Boulevard proceeded at a snail’s pace. People familiar with the area already know how difficult commuting through that area can be on a daily basis without even in the absence of an emergency situation. State troopers opened the southbound lanes to through traffic just before 10:00 a.m.

The state troopers investigating the pedestrian accident said that the drivers who remained on scene cooperated with the investigation. They will not face criminal charges. The investigation showed that other drivers might have been involved but did not stay at the crash site. The Georgia State Patrol troopers indicated that the man, identified as Cleveland Brown, 35 of Carrollton, wore exclusively black clothing while attempting to cross Tara Boulevard. The troopers said that the drivers could not see Mr. Brown at that time of day because of his clothing and the lack of lighting in the area.

State troopers said that Mr. Brown tried crossing Tara Boulevard in an area with no crosswalk. He came from the inside lane and got hit. State troopers reported that Tara Boulevard is notorious for pedestrian fatalities. Statewide, pedestrian fatalities are 16% higher at this point this year compared to last.
