I-85 South Car Wreck Causes Nightmare Morning Commute in Atlanta, Georgia

August 25, 2018

ATLANTA, GA— As if Monday morning could not get any worse, a motor vehicle crash on I-85 south created a nightmare commute for people heading to work and school. Traffic observers opined that anyone who usually takes I-85 into Atlanta should find another route into the city. Even though police cleared the accident by 7:20 a.m., Atlanta’s reported that the morning rush would not improve due to the delays caused by the crash.*

Monday morning traffic on I-85 went from bad to worse around 6:30 a.m. on Monday, August 20, 2018. A traffic accident on I-85 near the intersection of Indian Trial sent the morning commute into a tailspin. The aftermath of the crash slowed traffic down to a crawl at 5 miles per hour. Even as the sun was just rising, commuters were stuck in utter gridlock for over 100 minutes from State Road-316 to I-285. Drivers entering the area from Gwinnett County who even tried to get on I-85 found the right three lanes closed. Once the delays began to mount, the traffic pattern would not recover until the morning commute eased.

Traffic observers suggested alternate routes of travel in Atlanta. They recommended Buford Highway or Satellite Boulevard as alternatives to I-85. Taking one of these routes on Tuesday could save commuters considerable time and aggravation as they can keep moving instead of sitting in heavy traffic.

The Georgia Department of Transportation did its part to clear the accident scene, with assistance from local and state police. The Georgia DOT officially reopened all three travel lanes around 7:10 a.m. The agency reopenedthe interstate sooner than expected. Despite their efforts, traffic was impassable. Neither 11Alive nor the Georgia DOT indicated the severity of the accident or whether anyone suffered any injuries.
