Tragic Crash in McDuffie County, Georgia Leaves One Man Dead

MCDUFFIE COUNTY, GA. – August 18, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a vehicle crash in McDuffie County, Georgia, caused the death of a man from Warren County.*

At approximately 2:55 a.m. on August 18, 22-year-old Austin Luke Ashley, of Warrenton, Georgia, was traveling along Augusta Highway in McDuffie County. Ashley reportedly lost control of his 2005 Chevrolet Colorado and drove into a ditch off of the roadway. Ashley struck a fence and was then ejected from the vehicle. 

McDuffie County EMS, the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office, and Georgia State Patrol responded to the scene. They pronounced Ashley dead on-scene. The family was notified by the McDuffie County Coroner. Officials believe alcohol or drugs might have been a contributing factor to the accident, but it is not clear whether a toxicology analysis has been ordered. 

It does not appear that any other vehicles or people were involved in the accident. Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate and has not released additional information at this time.  

McDuffie County is located near the eastern border of the state of Georgia. The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety indicates that vehicle accidents more than doubled in McDuffie County between 2012 and 2016. 

In 2012, nearly 350 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 149 injuries and six deaths. By 2016, the accident total jumped to 757, causing 186 injuries and six deaths. During the five-year period (2012 to 2016), the highest number of fatal accidents in McDuffie County occurred in 2014. That year, 12 people died from a total of 600 vehicle accidents in the county.
