Georgia Sheriff’s Deputy Injured in Vehicle Crash in Jefferson County, Georgia

August 25, 2018

JEFFERSON COUNTY, GA. – August 18, 2018 (wjbf.com) A Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured in a vehicle accident in Wrens, Georgia, according to an online news report from wjbf.com.*

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on August 18. It appears Deputy James Kitchen, of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, was responding to “activity” at Wrens Memorial Airport and was involved in a single-vehicle crash. His patrol car flipped multiple times on Highway 88 near Amelia Lane.

Kitchens was transported to Augusta University Medical Center for treatment of unknown injuries. Jefferson County Sheriff Gary Hutchins told reporters on August 20 that Kitchens was awake and talking with his family. It is not clear how the accident occurred or what kind of activity was taking place at the airport. Kitchens reportedly does not remember many details about what happened.

Jefferson County has relatively few vehicle accidents each year, compared to some of the surrounding counties in the state. In 2016, a total of 247 vehicle accidents occurred in Jefferson County, according to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. These accidents led to 77 injuries and nine deaths. More than half of the fatal accidents in the county that year involved alcohol or speeding.

According to a report by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, during the five-year period between 2010 and 2014, 78 law enforcement officers in the United States died in vehicle crashes while responding to a call for service. More than half of these deaths — 53 percent — were situations in which officers were responding to calls for help from another officer and crashed while traveling to the scene.
