1-Year-Old Girl Struck and Killed by Vehicle in South Carolina

August 26, 2018

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC. – August 20, 2018 (wrdw.com) A 1-year-old girl was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle August 18 in South Carolina, according to an online news report from wrdw.com. The driver fled the scene.*

Shortly before 9 p.m. on August 18, 25-year-old Dillan Jesse Hapner stopped in front of the home of Jeffrey Bloodworth in the area of Conifer Court and Conifer Driver in North Augusta, South Carolina. Bloodworth, his 1-year-old daughter, and the girl’s mother, Sierra Daniels, were on the lawn. Hapner, who lives next door to Bloodworth, asked to borrow an auxiliary cord, and while the adults were discussing the cord he needed, the 1-year-old girl walked toward Hapner’s truck.

As Hapner started to drive away, his truck hit the girl. Daniels says she called out for Hapner to stop, but he kept driving, struck the girl a second time, and sped away. The girl was transported to Augusta University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. She had just turned one about one month prior to the accident.

Hapner abandoned his truck, a burgundy Chevrolet Avalanche, at a retailer about one block away and then ran away on foot. South Carolina authorities caught up to him in the area of Beverly Circle, not far from Bloodworth’s home, and arrested him. He was charged with duties of a driver involved in an accident involving death and appeared in court on August 20. The judge overseeing the case denied bond.

Hapner has no criminal record in the state of South Carolina, according to reports. Authorities and local prosecutors are continuing to investigate the incident and have not released additional information at this time.
