Georgia Authorities Arrest Suspect in Walker County Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Case

August 15, 2018

WALKER COUNTY, GA. – August 14, 2018 ( Georgia State Patrol Troopers have arrested a man they think was involved in a pedestrian hit-and-run accident August 14 in Walker County, Georgia. The story is reported online at*

At approximately 8:40 a.m., a woman was jogging with her dog on South Burnt Mill Road in Walker County. Near Gilbert Elementary School, a small truck crossed the centerline of the roadway, drove into the shoulder of the road, and hit the woman and her dog. The driver of the truck then fled the scene.

The woman, who has still not been identified, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. She has reportedly since been released from the hospital. Her dog, a black lab, died as a result of the collision.

Georgia State Patrol Troopers quickly began investigating the collision and asked for the public’s help in locating the truck or the driver. The woman was able to provide a description of the truck: small and imported, possibly an Isuzu or Nissan, in gray or dark gray color. She said it appeared to be an older model, not in excellent condition. She believed it had a Georgia tag that might be improperly displayed and might have an altered suspension. The truck was low to the ground, she said.

On August 16, based on tips from the public, Troopers seized the vehicle and arrested Troy Lee Smothers, of Lafayette, Georgia. He has been charged with failure to maintain a lane, leaving the scene of an accident with injury or damage, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle without due regard.

It is still not clear what caused Smothers to cross the centerline and drive into the opposite shoulder of the roadway. No additional information is available at this time.
