Man Sues Muscogee County School District for Hit-and-Run Bus Accident

August 26, 2018

COLUMBUS, GA. – August 17, 2018 (wtvm.com) According to an online news report from wtvm.com, a man from Columbus, Georgia, is suing the Muscogee County School District in connection with a hit-and-run bus accident that occurred in 2016.*

The lawsuit alleges at on August 23, 2016, Muscogee County school bus driver Terrence Williams hit two vehicles near Lynridge Avenue and Weems Road in Columbus. Williams was allegedly attempting to make a right turn while transporting school children and hit a 2009 Audi and one other vehicle and kept driving. The owner of the Audi, Joseph Bennett, says the accident caused him injury and damaged his vehicle.

Bennett has now filed a lawsuit against Williams and the school district for an unspecified amount of damages, including medical bills, lost wages, and punitive damages. The lawsuit further alleges that the school district was negligent in monitoring its bus drivers’ traffic violations. Less than a month before the accident, the suit says, Williams was cited for driving 93 mph in a 70 mph zone.

Georgia and federal law require suspension of a commercial driver’s license after receipt of two serious traffic violations within a 60-day period. It is not clear whether Williams still holds a commercial driver’s license or still works for the Muscogee County School District. It is also not clear whether Williams or any children were injured during the August 2016 accident.

The Muscogee County School District has not commented on the lawsuit at this time. As the lawsuit was just file, the district and Williams have not yet filed answers to the civil complaint.
