Reports Conflicting About Motorcyclist Killed in Chatham County, Georgia

WILMINGTON ISLAND, GA. – August 19, 2018 (wtoc.com) Reports are conflicting regarding a motorcyclist killed by a drunk driver August 19 in Chatham County, Georgia. One of the reports is online at wtoc.com.*

The report from wtoc.com indicates the victim, Clinton Jones, was 39 years old and struck by a drunk driver at the intersection of Highway 80 and Bryan Woods Road on Georgia’s Wilmington Island. 

Another report from savannahnow.com indicates Jones was 40 years old and was struck at the intersection of Highway 80 and Mapmaker Lane on Georgia’s Whitemarsh Island. 

Both reports say Jones died at the scene. They are also consistent in that the driver of the vehicle that struck Jones was 75-year-old Alice Thomson-Caine It is not clear whether Thomson-Caine was injured. She has reportedly been charged with homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol. One report indicates she has also been charged with failing to stop at a stop sign, and the other says she has been charged with failure to yield. 

The Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team with the Georgia State Patrol is investigating the collision and has not released additional information at this time. 

Both Wilmington Island and Whitemarsh Island are in Chatham County on the Atlantic coast of the state of Georgia. Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety indicates Chatham County is the site of a growing number of annual traffic accidents, including increasing accidents involving motorcycles. Information compiled by the Office of Highway Safety shows that a total of 23 motorcyclists died in traffic accidents in Chatham County from 2012 to 2016.
