Three Workers Injured at Construction Site of GA Renewable Power Plant

August 21, 2018

COLBERT, GA. – August 15, 2018 ( As reported online by, three workers were injured August 15 at the construction site for a new Georgia Renewable Power Plant in Colbert, Georgia.*

The accident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on August 15. Three men were working on a ledge at the construction site, about 80 feet above the ground, and large sections of pipe were being laid above them. Somehow, the pipes broke away and crashed onto the ledge where the three men were working. All three became pinned underneath the pipes.

According to Madison County EMS Director Bobby Smith, two off-duty EMTs, Josh Chandler and Kyle Ford, were mowing grass at the construction site when the accident occurred. They immediately responded to the scene, as did First Responder Barry Maxey, who works at the facility. Madison County Rescue/EMS crews, Colbert Volunteer Fire Department, and Corner Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene. Plant employees worked to cut the pipes as emergency response positioned to pull the men out.

Rescue workers then repelled the men down from the ledge and loaded them into waiting ambulances. They were all transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. One of the men reportedly suffered critical injuries. Smith said they had broken bones, and the man with critical injuries might have suffered internal bleeding.

None of the men has been identified, and it is not clear whether they were local to Georgia or were working on the construction site from out of state.

“I am very pleased with the rescue efforts,” Smith said. “Everyone worked together seamlessly to get the men extricated and get them to the hospital as quickly as possible.”
