Drunk Driver Kills Motorcyclist on Whitemarsh Island

WHITEMARSH ISLAND, GA. – August 19, 2018 (savannahnow.com) A drunk driver crashed into and killed a motorcyclist August 19 on Georgia’s Whitemarsh Island, according to an online news report from savannahnow.com.*

The crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on August 19 at the intersection of U.S. 80 and Mapmaker Lane on Whitemarsh Island. Georgia State Patrol spokesperson Daniel Chernich said 75-year-old Alice Thomson-Caine ran a stop sign at the intersection and crashed into a motorcycle. 

The motorcyclist, 40-year-old Clinton Jones, tragically died at the scene. It is not clear whether Thomson-Caine was injured. She has reportedly been charged with homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failure to stop at a stop sign. 

Whitemarsh Island is located in Chatham County on the Atlantic coast of the state of Georgia. Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety indicates Chatham County is the site of a growing number of annual traffic accidents, including increasing accidents involving motorcycles. 

In 2012, a total of 5,659 vehicle crashes occurred in Chatham County, which led to 1,388 injuries and 20 deaths. During the next five years, these numbers increased dramatically. The total number of accidents in the county jumped to 15,806 in 2016, resulting in 3,760 injuries and 43 deaths. 

The highest number of traffic-related deaths during a five-year studied period in the county (2012 to 2016) occurred in 2015. Vehicle accidents in Chatham County resulted in the deaths of more than 50 people that year, which included seven motorcyclists. A total of 23 motorcyclists died in traffic accidents in Chatham County from 2012 to 2016.
