Cobb County Reporters Dub Aug. 15 Semi-Truck Wreck on I-20 Worst in Careers

August 21, 2018

COBB COUNTY, GA. – August 19, 2018 ( News reporters who cover Cobb County, Georgia, are calling the August 15 tractor-trailer wreck that occurred on Interstate 20 the worst they have ever seen. Their thoughts on the wreck are covered on*

The accident occurred on Interstate 20 near Six Flags on the afternoon of August 15. A tractor-trailer crash resulted in fuel leaking onto the interstate, and traffic was halted for more than 10 hours, as crews cleaned up the fuel and debris. About 100 gallons of fuel spilled onto the interstate, and the tanker had to be drained of 9,000 gallons of fuel before it could safely be removed.

Crews worked overnight to reopen the roadway, and all lanes were finally back open early in the morning on August 16. It took about two hours to direct stuck drivers off of the interstate, and the entire cleanup process took nearly 12 hours. Traffic was significantly backed up during this time, particularly in the already busy Interstate 285 and I-20 interchange.

“This was the largest traffic event I have covered, and the domino effect on all the other interstates was unreal,” said reporter Mike Shields. Reporter Jill Nelson agreed, saying, “I have covered plenty of bad crashes before, but this one stands out because of the jam that drivers caused themselves, by blocking the shoulders. It took over two hours to finally get everyone out of there who was stuck.”

Further complicating matters, a second crash occurred on Interstate 285 East and Interstate 75. This accident also involved a tractor-trailer, and all lanes were blocked for a period of time. Heavy delays persisted well after the lanes were reopened. It is not clear how either crash occurred or whether anyone was hurt.
