DeKalb Police Cracking Down on Drag Racing After Crashes

August 21, 2018

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – August 20, 2018 (patch.com) According to an online news report from patch.com, police in DeKalb County, Georgia, are cracking down on drag racing in response to crashes that have occurred, particularly along one stretch of road.*

Moreland Avenue in Decatur, Georgia, is known for drag races. Earlier in August, a Dodge Charger involved in a drag race on Moreland Avenue traveled off the roadway and crashed into an auto repair shop. The vehicle landed on its side following the crash. The shop’s owners had installed concrete barriers because the shop had already been hit by speeding cars. However, the Charger flew over those barriers before hitting the shop.

On August 19, police cracked down on the racing activity. They deployed 30 units that night, including wreckers, to Moreland Avenue. Police arrested seven people, impounded four vehicles, and issued 17 citations to people drag racing. One of the arrests and impounds that night was related to a speeding car that nearly hit a police officer. A spokesperson for the DeKalb County Police Department said officers also recovered one weapon during the crackdown.

“Driving in the state of Georgia and in DeKalb County is a privilege and not a right,” said Major K.D. Johnson, South Precinct Commander for DeKalb Police. “We will enforce the laws and ordinances of this county to protect the safety of other drivers on the road.”

In 2015, a drag racing crash on Moreland Avenue resulted in the death of three children. The two drivers were traveling more than 80 mph near the area of Interstate 285 and the Starlight Drive-In. They were sentenced to time in prison last year in connection with the crash.
