Semi-Truck Accidents Wreak Havoc in Cobb County, Georgia

COBB COUNTY, GA. – August 16, 2018 (11alive.com) A pair of semi-truck accidents on August 15 and August 16 wreaked havoc on traffic throughout Cobb County, Georgia, according to an online news report from wsbtv.com.*

One accident occurred on Interstate 20 near Six Flags in the afternoon on August 15. A tractor-trailer crash resulted in fuel leaking onto the interstate, and traffic was halted for more than 10 hours, as crews cleaned up the fuel and debris. Backups were reported from Six Flags past Hamilton E. Holmes and the Anderson Avenue exit. All lanes were finally reopened early in the morning on August 16. 

A second crash occurred on Interstate 286 East and Interstate 75 on August 16. This accident also involved a tractor-trailer that overturned, and all lanes were blocked for a period of time. This accident involved a pickup truck, as well, and officials reported significant damage to the roadway. Heavy delays persisted well after the lanes were reopened. It is not clear how either crash occurred or whether anyone was hurt. 

Cobb County is located in the northern portion of the state of Georgia. According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Cobb County is the site of numerous vehicle accidents each year, and its annual accident totals are growing. 

In 2012, a total of 11,767 vehicle accidents occurred in Cobb County, leading to 2,860 injuries and 47 deaths. By 2016, those numbers had increased to 34,985 total accidents, 8,470 injuries, and 59 deaths. During both 2012 and 2016, more than half of the fatality accidents in Cobb County were related to speeding or alcohol consumption.
