Columbus Authorities Investigating Pedestrian Accident

COLUMBUS, GA. – August 17, 2018 ( According to an online news story from, authorities in Columbus, Georgia, are investigating an accident involving a pedestrian that occurred August 17.*

The Columbus Police Department and Columbus Fire/EMS responded to the scene of a traffic accident around 4 a.m. on August 17 near Buena Vista Road and Pembrook Drive. The accident involved a pedestrian who sustained injuries after being struck by a car. The pedestrian has not been identified, and the extent of his or her injuries is not known. It is not clear whether the pedestrian required transport to a hospital for treatment. 

It is not clear how the accident occurred or whether the driver, who has also not been identified, stayed at the scene. Columbus authorities are continuing to investigate the accident and have not released additional information to the public at this time. 

Columbus is the second-largest city in the state of Georgia and is located in Muscogee County. In 2016, 8,299 vehicle accidents occurred in Muscogee County, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In those accidents, 1,659 people sustained injuries, and 27 people were fatally injured. 

The number of vehicle accident fatalities in 2016 was the highest for the county during the previous five years and was almost double the traffic fatality total for the year prior (2015). Five of the people who died in traffic accidents in Muscogee County during 2016 were pedestrians. Typically, about 50 percent of the fatality accidents in Muscogee County involve alcohol consumption or speeding. These two factors played a role in 10 of the fatal vehicle crashes in 2016.
