Two Tractor-Trailer Accidents Snarl Traffic in Cobb County
COBB COUNTY, GA. – August 16, 2018 (wsbtv.com) Two separate tractor-trailer accidents caused massive traffic delays in Cobb County, Georgia, on August 15 and August 16, according to an online news report from wsbtv.com.*
One accident occurred on Interstate 20 near Six Flags in the afternoon on August 15. A tractor-trailer crash resulted in fuel leaking onto the interstate, and traffic was halted for more than 10 hours, as crews cleaned up the fuel and debris. All lanes were finally reopened early in the morning on August 16.
A second crash occurred on Interstate 286 East and Interstate 75. This accident also involved a tractor-trailer, and all lanes were blocked for a period of time. Heavy delays persisted well after the lanes were reopened. It is not clear how either crash occurred or whether anyone was hurt.
The corridor of Interstate 285 between Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 is the site of frequent accidents involving large trucks and buses, according to local reports. When these accidents occur, due to their scale, several lanes of the interstate have to be shut down, and gridlock ensues throughout the area. Aside from the traffic backups, these accidents are known for causing serious injuries and fatalities. In 2016, 179 people died on Georgia roads in accidents that involved a bus or a large truck.
During the week of August 6, as part of a Large Truck and Bus Enforcement and Educational Initiative, law enforcement officers in Cobb County targeted dangerous drivers in the corridor. In total, the officers issued 932 citations. Almost 600 of these citations were for left lane violations. In Georgia, it is illegal for large trucks and buses to drive in the left lane. In addition to lane violations, 12 of the citations were for violations of the Georgia Hands-Free Law, and nine were for speeding.
