Woodstock Motorcyclist Injured in Crash with SUV

WOODSTOCK, GA. – August 15, 2018 (patch.com) According to an online news report from patch.com, a motorcyclist was injured August 15 in Woodstock, Georgia, during a crash with an SUV.*

The crash occurred at approximately 6 a.m. on August 15 on East Cherokee Drive, near Woodstock. William Lunsford, 48, of Woodstock, was riding his motorcycle eastbound on East Cherokee Drive. At the area of Tomahawk Trail, a westbound SUV attempted to turn onto a convenience store and struck Lunsford’s motorcycle. 

Lunsford was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia, with serious injuries. His current medical condition is not known. The driver of the SUV, 66-year-old William Bartula, of Woodstock, was reportedly not injured. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident and has not yet released additional information. 

According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents in Cherokee County are on the rise. Between 2012 and 2016, the number of crashes in the county more than doubled. The number of injuries from those accidents also nearly doubled. However, the number of fatality accidents seems to be trending down. 

In 2012, 18 fatality vehicle accidents occurred in Cherokee County. That number lowered to 16 in 2013, then to 12 in both 2014 and 2015. By 2016, the number of fatality accidents was down to seven. Most fatal accidents in the county are related to speeding or alcohol or both. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, more than 10 percent of all traffic fatalities in Georgia involve motorcyclists. In 2016, more than 170 motorcyclists were killed in vehicle accidents, which was a 36 percent increase from 2014. Since 2013, the number of motorcyclists not wearing a helmet has continually increased. People age 20 to 29 are statistically most likely to be involved in fatal motorcycle accidents.
