Indiana Man Survives Severe Injuries From January Car Accident

August 20, 2018

SOUTH BEND, IN. – (atlanta.cbslocal.com) An Indiana man involved in a car accident earlier this year has recovered from devastating injuries, according to an online news report from atlanta.cbslocal.com.*

Last January, 22-year-old Brock Meister was involved in a serious vehicle accident in Indiana. The vehicle he was in encountered a patch of black ice and crashed into a ditch. Meister remembers the entire accident and the aftermath.

“I remember everything,” he said. “My head went through the window. I had my seat belt on, but half my body was out of the window.”

Meister had suffered extreme injuries, including internal decapitation. His head and a portion of his spine at the base of his skull had been completely separated from the rest of his neck. Doctors said the injury is “almost universally fatal,” but Meister survived.

“It’s an extremely rare event to make it to the hospital after suffering that type of injury,” said Dr. Kashif Shaikh, a neurologist at Memorial Hospital. The doctor credits Meister’s quick-thinking friends following the crash, who kept him immobile and did not let him sit up, which could have fatally damaged his spine. Shaikh and other surgeons at the hospital used screws and rods to reattach and align Meister’s bones.

Meister spent eight months in a neck brace and was in physical therapy five days a week. He has now regained about 50 percent of the motion in his neck. The young man is no stranger to surgery or to going under the knife at the direction of Dr. Shaikh. Six years before the accident, Shaikh was part of a team of doctors who removed a tumor in Meister’s brain.

“I’m just thankful to be here,” Meister said. “That’s all that matters.”
