UPDATE: I-95 Back Open Five Hours After Deadly Wreck in Hardeeville, South Carolina

August 20, 2018

HARDEEVILLE, SC. – (wsav.com) Interstate 95 is finally back open after lane closures backed up traffic for five hours following a deadly crash. The story is reported online by wsav.com.*

At approximately 9:30 p.m., a tractor-trailer was pulled off of Interstate 95 North near mile marker 3 in Hardeeville, South Carolina. It is not clear why the truck was pulled over at this time. The driver of the tractor-trailer then pulled out back onto the interstate but failed to yield to oncoming traffic. The truck traveled into the path of a northbound 1999 Ford Expedition, and the Expedition then crashed into the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Expedition was wearing a seat belt but was tragically killed in the collision, but the tractor trailer driver did not reportedly sustain serious injuries.

The collision caused traffic to back up along I-95 across the South Carolina state line and into Georgia. Traffic was reportedly at a standstill from Hardeeville, South Carolina, to Port Wentworth, Georgia. Lanes were blocked for five hours as crews cleared the scene. Reports indicate the interstate has now fully reopened, as of approximately 2:30 a.m.

Neither the victim nor the truck driver has been identified at this time. The truck driver has been charged with failure to yield right of way. Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are still investigating the collision and have not released additional information at this time.

Interstate 95 is a major roadway connecting the states of Georgia and South Carolina. It crosses into Georgia at the eastern border of the state, in Chatham County, which is where Port Wentworth is located.
