HARDEEVILLE, SC. – (islandpacket.com) According to an online news report from islandpacket.com, a crash on I-95 involving a car and a tractor-trailer left one driver dead. Traffic from the collision backed up into Georgia.*

At approximately 9:30 p.m., a tractor-trailer was pulled off of Interstate 95 North near mile marker 3 in Hardeeville, South Carolina. The driver of the tractor-trailer pulled out back onto the interstate, into the path of a northbound 1999 Ford Expedition. The Expedition then crashed into the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the Expedition, who has not been identified, was wearing a seat belt but was killed in the collision. The driver of the tractor-trailer, who has also not been identified, was not injured. The trucker has been charged with failure to yield right of way.

The collision caused traffic to back up along I-95 across the South Carolina state line and into Georgia. Traffic was reportedly at a standstill from Hardeeville, South Carolina, to Port Wentworth, Georgia. Lanes were blocked for five hours as crews cleared the scene. The interstate was fully reopened around 2:30 a.m.

Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol are still investigating the collision and have not released additional information at this time.

Accidents with tractor-trailers are known for causing serious injuries and fatalities. In 2016, 179 people died on Georgia roads in accidents that involved a bus or a large truck. Nationwide, more than 4,000 people died in truck or bus accidents in 2016.
