Thousands of Atlanta School Buses Hit the Roads for Testing Before Year Began

August 20, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – ( As the new school year begins in Atlanta, Georgia, thousands of school buses have already undergone rigorous testing. The story is online at*

Each year, millions of students ride school buses to get to Atlanta schools. But before they can start their school year journeys, the buses need to pass a series of safety tests. Shortly prior to the school year 20,000 buses hit the streets of Atlanta to make sure they pass muster for carrying children. The Georgia Motor Vehicle Compliance Division says testing included the buses’ emergency lights, operational lights, tires, brakes, and every other piece of equipment. If one of the buses doesn’t meet standards, it will be repaired or taken out of circulation.

“If it costs too much to keep it up to safe standards, they will take it out of the bus lineup and get a new one,” Sgt. Billy Blocker said.

This testing doesn’t end after the beginning of the school year, either. Every school district is required to test its buses at least once a month and to renew safety certificates once a year. Interested parents can always ask to see the decal or safety certificate for their child’s bus.

In addition, drivers must make sure all of their qualifications meet district standards before they can operate the school buses. This includes fingerprinting, reference checks, and background checks, along with at least 20 hours of safety training a year.

Considering the precious cargo the buses and drivers handle every day, it’s definitely not too much to ask. School sessions begin in most of the state later this month.
