Texas Mother Killed Shielding Children from Car in School Parking Lot

August 21, 2018

EL PASO, TX. – August 14, 2018 (wsbradio.com) A mother in Texas tragically died trying to shield several children from being hit by a car in a school parking lot. The story is reported by wsbradio.com.*

Monday was the first day of school at Mary N. Tippin Elementary School in El Paso, Texas. Kharisma Ashlee James, 33, was picking up her 6-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son from the school at about 3:30 p.m. and was walking through the parking lot with them. A vehicle started to back out from a parking spot, backed into another car, then reportedly hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

James saw the driver and tried to get his attention, then attempted to shield her two children and one other child from being hit. The driver struck James and all three children. James sadly died at the scene. Her two children and the third child, age 10, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. All three children are expected to survive, according to Victor Araiza, chief of the police force for the El Paso Independent School District.

The driver of the vehicle, 58-year-old Roger Hawking, was reportedly picking up his grandchildren from the school. It is not clear whether he will be charged in connection with the incident.

Araiza said the district would work to find ways to improve safety in school parking lots but added that the fault for this incident lies with Hawking.

“It’s difficult to describe how this could have been prevented,” Araiza said. “The actuality is that the responsible person for this is the driver of that vehicle. The fault does not rest on the school administration.”

James was a veteran of the United States Army and recent graduate of the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing at Texas Tech University.
