Double Tractor-Trailer Crash in Gwinnett County Ties up Traffic on I-85

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA. - August 15, 2018 (cbs46.com) A double tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 85 August 15 tied up traffic through Gwinnett County, according to an online news story from cbs46.com.*

The crash reportedly occurred in the morning on August 15 and involved two tractor-trailers. The two trucks collided near the area of southbound I-85 and Georgia Highway 316. It is not clear whether anyone was injured. A large amount of plastic debris scattered across the roadway because of the crash, affecting three lanes of travel on the interstate. 

Georgia State Patrol is investigating the cause of the collision and has not yet released additional information. The drivers of the two trucks have not been identified, and the cause of the crash is not yet known. 

Gwinnett County is located in the north-central portion of the state of Georgia. The county has an estimated population of more than 920,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 85, Interstate 985, U.S. Route 23, U.S. Route 29, and U.S. Route 78. 

According to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, numerous vehicle accidents occur in Gwinnett County every year. In 2012, nearly 29,000 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, resulting in injuries to 6,418 people and in the deaths of 45 people. Accident figures rose steadily during the next four years. In 2016, a total of 41,527 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 9,436 injuries and 61 deaths. 

The highest number of vehicle fatalities from 2012 to 2016 occurred in 2015, when 67 people died in motor vehicle accidents. Almost half of those fatality accidents involved alcohol or excessive speeding. Twelve of the people killed in motor vehicle accidents that year were motorcyclists and fourteen were pedestrians.
