Children Sickened by Chlorine Overload in Johns Creek Swimming Pool

August 21, 2018

JOHNS CREEK, GA. – (wsbtv.com) According to an online news story by wsbtv.com, several children in Johns Creek, Georgia, fell ill from a chlorine overload at a Lifetime Fitness swimming pool.*

Johns Creek Fire officials indicate a chlorine mixer at the Lifetime Fitness malfunctioned. The malfunction affected the outdoor pool, where 28 children, ages 10 to 12, were gathered for a swimming meet. The high levels of chlorine in the pool caused many of the children to develop red eyes and caused several to vomit or experience difficulty breathing.

Cade Patterson, 14, came to the gym at about the time the incident was coming to a head. “We pulled up, and I saw these ambulances, paramedics, and fire trucks,” he said. He also observed a girl being wheeled away from the gym on a stretcher. “This is really disconcerting,” Patterson said. “It’s not something you want to hear, and it just worries me that something like that could happen. I’ve been coming here for a really long time, and I’ve never had any issues myself. I hope the kids are doing alright.”

Eight children in total were taken to local hospitals for treatment, and others were treated at the scene. Lifetime Fitness reportedly shut down the pool to allow officials to investigate and to prevent further injury.

The gym released a statement to reporters saying: “This evening, our team responded to an issue that led to the evacuation and closure of our outdoor pool area. This evacuation was implemented quickly and with the safety of our members and team members in mind. Additionally, local authorities were engaged to support the evacuation and provide assistance to members and guests, as needed. The pool will remain closed while we review and determine the cause of the issue.”
